In the quiet hills of Bugwa, Eastern Uganda, a little girl once lived a life no child should know — a life shaped by poverty, sickness, and silence.

Her name is Namataka Angellar.

Born with a cleft condition, Angellar also faced a painful family reality. Her mother lives with mental illness and sickle cell disease, and her father passed away when she was still very young. With no stable home and no reliable income, Angellar was left to survive on the kindness of neighbors who themselves were struggling.

Most days, she went hungry.
Most nights, she slept without certainty.
Every morning, she watched other children walk to school while she remained behind — barefoot, forgotten, and voiceless.

Yet inside her small heart was a big dream.

She wanted to learn.
She wanted to smile.
She wanted to belong.

HIWI Uganda Steps In

Angellar’s story might have ended in quiet suffering — but it didn’t.

She was identified by Health Is Wealth Initiative (HIWI) Uganda, whose outreach team discovered her living in extreme vulnerability. Immediately, HIWI took action.

Angellar was referred to St. Joseph’s Hospital, Wakiso, where she received life-changing cleft surgery and medical care. For the first time, she could smile freely, eat without pain, and speak with confidence.

But HIWI did not stop at healing her body.

Recognizing her potential, HIWI Uganda identified a school for Angellar and paid her school fees, giving her something she had never had before — a future.

Today, Angellar is in school, learning, laughing, and dreaming. She holds books instead of sorrow. She wears a uniform instead of rags. She smiles — not just because her cleft was repaired, but because her life was restored.

A Life Transformed

Angellar’s story is proof that when health meets opportunity, destiny changes.

From a homeless, sick, and forgotten child, she has become a student with hope — a little girl with a voice, a vision, and a tomorrow.

This is what HIWI Uganda stands for:
Finding the invisible.
Healing the broken.
Educating the future.

Angellar is no longer defined by what she was born into — she is defined by where she is going.

And her journey has only just begun. 💗
