Executive Director’s Message
Dr. Nicholas Mugagga – Health is Wealth Initiative (HIWI Uganda)

It is with great honor that I welcome you to Health is Wealth Initiative (HIWI Uganda). Our organization was founded on a simple yet powerful truth: a nation can only prosper when its people are healthy, informed, and empowered. At HIWI, we strive every day to transform this belief into reality by delivering practical, community-centered solutions that address the most pressing health and social challenges facing Ugandans. Our work is anchored in compassion, professionalism, integrity, and a deep commitment to improving lives across all regions we serve.

One of our greatest strengths lies in our unique partnership with St. Joseph’s Hospital Wakiso (SJHW). HIWI and SJHW operate under the same roof, a relationship that allows us to integrate service delivery, support efficient referrals, and collaborate effectively on community health programs. In many intervention areas, HIWI serves as the advocacy and community mobilization arm of the hospital—ensuring that critical information, preventive messages, and health services reach families at the grassroots level. Through joint and separate outreaches, we bring medical care closer to the people, extend health screening services, raise awareness, and promote early care-seeking behavior. This partnership strengthens not only our institutional capacity but also our shared mission to make healthcare more accessible and community-driven.

Our work spans multiple thematic areas that contribute directly to improved health outcomes and overall community resilience. HIWI is deeply invested in behavioral change communication, where we empower individuals to make informed decisions about their health and well-being. Through targeted campaigns, dialogues, and community engagements, we address misconceptions, encourage positive practices, and promote healthier lifestyles.

We are equally committed to community systems strengthening, building the capacity of local leaders, volunteers, and community structures to sustain health initiatives long after our direct intervention. By strengthening local systems, we ensure continuity, ownership, and long-term impact.

In the area of family planning and reproductive health, HIWI promotes informed choices, access to services, and reproductive rights for women, men, and adolescents. We believe that empowered families are healthier, more stable, and better positioned to thrive economically.

Our efforts in HIV, TB, and malaria prevention and control remain central to our work. We support testing, counseling, adherence, awareness, and linkages to care, ensuring that communities have the tools and knowledge needed to fight these diseases. Complementing this is our nutrition programming, which emphasizes healthy feeding practices, maternal nutrition, child growth monitoring, and the prevention of malnutrition.

HIWI also implements programs for orphans and vulnerable children, ensuring their access to education, protection, health services, and psychosocial support. Our WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) interventions promote safe water, good sanitation, and hygiene practices that are essential in preventing communicable diseases.

Beyond health-focused interventions, we strongly believe that economic empowerment contributes directly to better health outcomes. Our livelihood and economic strengthening initiatives help families build income, resilience, and financial stability. We also support education as a tool for transformation, offering programs that promote learning, life skills, and long-term opportunities.

As we expand our reach, we remain grateful for the unwavering support of our partners, including community leaders, volunteers, government agencies, donors, and institutions such as St. Joseph’s Hospital Wakiso, Centenary Bank, and the National Water and Sewerage Corporation, whose collaboration strengthens and sustains our work.

Together, we will continue to champion a healthier, more empowered Uganda—because health is indeed wealth.
