In the fragile hills of Bumufuni Sub-County, a baby once lay in danger — too weak to feed, too small to cry loudly, and too vulnerable to survive without help.
His name is Wanyama Sunday.
Born with a cleft lip and cleft palate, Sunday could not breastfeed or swallow properly. Every attempt to feed him ended in choking, coughing, or exhaustion. His tiny body began to weaken as hunger and infection threatened his life.
His home situation made everything worse.
His mother is poor and chronically sick, barely strong enough to care for him.
His father, trapped in alcoholism, offered no support, no food, no medical help.
At just one month old, Sunday was living in silent crisis.
How HIWI Uganda Saved His Life
Sunday’s suffering was identified by Health Is Wealth Initiative (HIWI) Uganda, through community outreach led by Pastor Wamutu Ivan. When HIWI learned about his condition, they moved quickly.
HIWI referred Baby Sunday to St. Joseph’s Hospital, Wakiso, where doctors carried out successful cleft surgery and treatment that saved his life.
For the first time, Sunday could feed properly.
For the first time, he could breathe, swallow, and grow stronger.
For the first time, his future became possible.
Today, Baby Sunday is healing well and preparing to start school in the future, just like any other child. What once threatened to end his life has now become a story of survival — because someone cared.
